Officer Kerrie Orozco, a seven-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, was a daughter, wife and stepmother. She was an active member of the community, coaching the Nebraska Boys and Girls Club baseball team and volunteering with the Girl Scouts and the Special Olympics.
She had given birth in February, prematurely, to her first child a daughter she named Olivia, and was scheduled to begin her delayed maternity leave when the baby was released from the neonatal unit at the hospital.
Instead, Officer Orozco was killed in the line of duty by a convicted felon, known gang member, Marcus D. Wheeler, the day before her maternity leave was scheduled to begin.
