Avoiding a protracted lawsuit, the city of Inkster has agreed to settle with beaten motorist Floyd Dent for $1.4 million, WDIV reports.
You might recall that Dent was the motorist who was beaten by Inskter cop William Melendez during a traffic stop in January. A video showed Melendez putting Dent in a choke hold while he repeatedly pounded his fist on his head. Melendez was fired. Two other cops were suspended.
Dent is expected to testify Thursday in a preliminary hearing for Melendez, who faces criminal charges in connection with the beating.
Dent tells WDIV's Kevin Dietz that he hopes the city of Inkster learns from this incident.
“Nothing like this will ever happen in Inkster," he said.
He said money won't change his life much.
“There’s going to be be a lot of people ringing my doorbell. You know, long lost friends,” he tells WDIV. “Do you have any plans for the money? No, not really, I’m going back to work. I miss work. I miss the people I work with.”
