An off-duty Cook County Sheriff's officer intervened during an armed robbery late Sunday in East Garfield Park, shooting the suspected gunman, authorities said.
About 10:25 p.m. Sunday, an off-duty Cook County correctional officer exchanged gunfire with an armed offender during a robbery in the 3400 block of West Madison Street, according to Chicago police and the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
The armed robber, a man whose exact age was not immediately available, was hit in his lower right leg, Chicago police said. The man then drove himself to Stroger Hospital where he was taken into custody by Chicago police.
Following the shooting, police taped off a vacant lot and alleyway on the southeast corner of Madison Street and St. Louis Avenue, as well as a portion of Madison Street.
