ST. JOSEPH - A man who allegedly beat his mother over the head with a meat mallet, tried to smother her with a pillow, then stabbed her to death told a Berrien County detective it was "a mercy killing," according to testimony Thursday in Berrien County Trial Court.
Monty Menefee, 47, of Coloma was bound over for trial on one count of first-degree murder following a preliminary hearing before Judge Gary Bruce. He was arrested April 29 on an open murder charge in the death of his mother, Lavonne Monta, 79.
Police were called to a warehouse at 500 Washington St. in Coloma April 24 on a report of a possible suicide.
Under questioning Thursday by Berrien Assistant Prosecutor Cortney O'Malley, Coloma Township police Patrolman Wes Smigielski said he arrived at Red Arrow Marine, a boat detailing and storage facility, to find a woman dead in a bed in living quarters above the warehouse.
