A mother and her son were found dead after a fire inside a home in the 3600-block of West 55th Place on Chicago's Southwest Side. While signs point to a homicide, at this point, police are calling it a death investigation.
Police say a home invasion preceded the deaths and that the fire was intentionally set.
Firefighters responded to a small fire in a couch at the home just before 3 p.m. Thursday, but found the bodies of Concepcion Herrera, 48, and her 22-year-old son, Carlos Herrera, inside the house. The mother stayed home to help Carlos, who had autism but was relatively high-functioning.
