An eruption of gunfire outside a South Shore homicide scene about 3 a.m. Monday morning scattered screaming mourners into the neighborhood as police drew weapons and moved toward the shooting.
About 100 yards away, a 24-year-old man lay bleeding from abdomen and leg wounds, the 49th person shot in the city since Friday afternoon.
The mourners had gathered at the crime scene near 78th Street and South Shore after a man had been found dead with gunshot wounds about 12:30 a.m. Police found a second man shot in the same incident bleeding in an apartment hallway.
A sergeant at the scene called in the gunfire from the 3 a.m. shooting and police drew their guns while trying to light up a vacant lot next to the homicide scene that the gunfire echoed through.
