A Houston police officer was killed in the line of duty Monday while trying to stop a suspect during a high-speed chase, according to HPD.
The chase began in the area of 290 and FM 1960, then moved to Highway 6 near West Oaks Mall, Interstate 10, and ended on W. Little York near Interstate 45. Police said the suspect was firing shots out of the window of his vehicle during the chase.
HPD Officer Richard Martin was trying to assist in the chase when he was struck and killed by the suspect. Police say the suspect intentionally hit the officer as he was laying down spikes.
"Officer Martin attempted to deploy spike strips to disable the vehicle. We have every belief to indicate to us that the suspect intentionally struck and killed Officer Martin," said HPD Chief Charles McClelland.
