Community to honor fallen Oxford officer killed in 1925 unsolved murder - fallen officer John "Jay" Gould, who was killed in 1925

An early morning murder of an Oxford nightwatchman on Feb. 13, 1925 is an unsolved crime that will forever be remembered in the community’s collective history.

Some said it was members of the Purple Gang who fire a sawed-off shotgun at Officer John “Jay” Gould as the result of a botched bank robbery. Others contend Gould was killed during illegal bootlegging along M-24.

No matter what really happened that day around dusk more than 90 years ago, the community will be honoring the fallen officer Tuesday evening at the Oxford Township Cemetery with a proper grave stone — on a plot that has sat unkempt for years — thanks to a retired lawman and a current Oxford Village officer.

Former Oxford Police Captain James Malcolm heard the story of Gould’s death shortly after coming onto the department in 1973. He did his research, started looking around for a grave site and found the spot unmarked.
