Authorities took 33 people into custody Saturday morning after a five-hour standoff  with SWAT teams at an Edgewater apartment building, police said.

According to preliminary information from police, officers had curbed a vehicle about 11:20 p.m. for a minor traffic violation in the 6300 block of North Lakewood Avenue. At some point those officers became the target of verbal abuse from people attending a party nearby at an apartment on that block.

Soon after, the officers heard a series of gunshots and believed the gunfire came from a second-floor apartment nearby where a party was taking place, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Jose Estrada.

Police had said earlier the SWAT response was prompted by a gunman firing shots at officers, but an investigation later revealed that the gunfire had actually come from an area behind the apartment building, Estrada said.
